It's a reference to the film masterpiece Back to the Future. If you find a reason to have 88 simultaneous colors on your terminal, your entire computer is whisked back in time to the late 70's. The result will be some music, then the creation of the VT100/ANSI X3.4 standards will be prevented and we'll have to start all over. Let's avoid this.
