This problem could be due to any number of things. For some ideas on where
to start try checking out Nelson's version of SugarScape. You can get that
by visiting the user-community page:

    http://www.santafe.edu/projects/swarm/users/user-community.html

The file is called sss.tar.gz.  The class SugarScape has an example of
filling a Discrete2d space with values from a PGM file. Note that since this
simulation was written the  -setDiscrete2d: toFile: method has been added to
the Discrete2d class.

Note also the format of the PGM file, which is called sugarspace.pgm.
