Knut's tool certainly looks worth investigating, and it's certainly possible his approach is better than the one in ly2video in some respects.  However please don't write off ly2video just because

That solved the problem for me. I changed the usleep 250 to sleep 0.000250 in mkvideo. Now the short video_mwe.ly goes pretty fast. My own first project takes a little longer, for example while "burs
