And from a plot and theme point of view, I think it's a good idea to have him wielding something other than the ancestral weapon of his family, which has seen much honorable service and would be noticed if it went missing from the keep. The player might only ever hear a description of the weapon, which the duke carried into the Magick Riot, but the many obvious differences between the weapon Ella describes and the weapon he now carries should reinforce the point that he has become an entirely different person in the intervening 15 years.

Hadn't spent any thought on that yet, but I feel this would be a
perfect fit. And it could still become useful afterwards, if the
player decides to go the evil route or finish off the dragon.
