When a macro is inserted it is assumed that the marked region becomes
the argument of the macro. That's why it is not deleted. If you call a
LaTeX-math command outside of a math construct the behavior becomes more
apparent because the argument is put into braces.
I can imagine that inside of a math construct it would be less
surprising if the region were replaced when CUA mode is active but I
don't know a way to set `delete-selection' conditionally.
