That's what my patch did (as mixing FD and file broke on DOS); Akim
clearly stated he didn't address that here. *sigh* And I was so looking
forward to my first commit :-)

Akim, how would you feel about my sending in a patch for autoconf (the
script) to remove the use of FD 4 (as this causes problems when
autoconf is invoked from perl (i.e. by autoupdate) on DOS?  Since this
breaks autoupdate, I think this is critical enough to go into 2.50.
