I'm not sure which parts you refer to that you would consider too
dangerous; the *_configure_args changes?  From a glance, they could
cause some packages to fail -- many packages have custom-written hacks
to invoke sub-configures in a different way (e.g., without passing the
cache file, so that a different compiler may be used (and added in CC))
and thus use or mess with the arguments.

I haven't looked closely at the patch, though; I don't care much whether
I get to it before or after it is committed (the plan is still to look
at every change that goes into 2.60 anyways).
