Well, as I understand it automake needs very few changes to work
on my system (DOS box under WinME), so I figured it was already
DOS-friendly where it counted. In any case this shouldn't hurt
(unless automake is also supposed to support paths with embedded
backslashes).

Right; I was merely a bit confused by its similarity to a shell
wildcard for a drivespec.
