SRC is not used by automake at all.

MAKE is typically set by the make program.  The Autoconf macro
AC_PROG_MAKE_SET (see `info Autoconf --index-search AC_PROG_MAKE_SET')
ensures that MAKE is set.  Automake uses AC_PROG_MAKE_SET.
