Thanks all. I'm still not sure just what happened, because we jettisoned 
another unit during the afternoon lab, even with commutating diodes in 
place. I hope Julius' strategy works for me too, since swapping parts 
around indicates that it was the STK500s not the AVRs that got hurt.
