Actually, I just got that going about an hour ago.  I had to get
access to a Windows box so I could upgrade the firmware on my JTAGICE
but after doing that, avarice now programs the chip just fine.  So
does AVRDUDE using the latest firmware for the STK500, so the problem
was indeed a firmware issue afterall.
