AVRISPs are known for this problem.  The trick to updating them involves
powering the programmer without an AVR attached (just the GND and VCC pins),
and short-circuiting a couple of pads on the programmer pcb.  The relevant
app notes (there are several versions, all with the same information) are
easily found on avr freaks or google by searching for avr isp manual
upgrade:

You'll also find the information in the help files with a relatively new
AvrStudio 4 (it really is a common problem!).  Look in the "AVRISP User's
Guide", under "Getting started" and "Manual firmware upgrade".  I've
recently done this with a couple of AVRISPs that stopped working - the
upgrade functioned smoothly.
