There is nothing going wrong, everything is fine.

avr-gcc does not list support for any xmega device and it does not lie:

There is no support for xmega in avr-gcc up to now,
and I don't know if anyone intends to add it to, e.g., 4.7.

Presumably you saw xmega support in some distributions that added it
privately, so you must search for that distribution resp. its sources
and recapture your build.
