GNU ed is an upward compatible extension of Posix ed, which is documented
at <https://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/9699919799/utilities/ed.html>.
The x, y, and z commands are not in Posix, so GNU ed is free to make them
do anything that seems useful. The "Rationale" section on that page
explains the differences between Posix and historic/BSD ed.

If you have ever wondered if you are in hell, it has been said, then
you are on a well-traveled road of spiritual inquiry. If you are
absolutely sure you are in hell, however, then you must be on the Cross
Bronx Expressway. --Alan Feuer, New York Times, 2002-09-20
