hmm, I know some of the GNU tools' error messages can be jumped to with
    C-x ` [next-error] in emacs, some can't.

The GNU Coding Standards specify a standard format for error-messages
that all GNU programs should use when appropriate, particularly for
errors that relate to a line in some source file. If any GNU program
doesn't use that format when it ought to, that is a bug.

I will forward your message to the sed maintainer. Would people
please report any such bugs they find in other GNU programs?

(We try to avoid the term "GNU tools" because it tends to encourage
the common misconception that GNU is a collection of tools rather than
an operating system.)

If a non-GNU program doesn't use that format but it would make sense
to use it, we can't say the developers made a mistake not using it,
but it would probably be an improvement if they did.
