Setting switch-to-buffer-preserve-window-point to nil really helps, but only in the case of switching buffers with 'C-x b'. It doesn't help when the buffer is displayed with any other command such as 'C-x <C-left>' (previous-buffer) or with set-window-configuration or window-state-put, etc.
