I don't know much either, especially not where to put these files
in a distribution-independent way. Their purpose is to override
the SQL dialect mode for *.typ, but I think this can be achieved 
using *manual installation* by putting
  autocmd BufNewFile,BufRead *.typ setf gtypist
*before* "syntax on" in .vimrc
=> can you confirm this on Ubuntu?
