It indeed crashes as soon as looking at the root content:

/hurd/ext2fs: ../../ext2fs/pager.c:1345: diskfs_get_filemap: Assertion 
'(((right) != ((mach_port_t) 0)) && ((right) != ((mach_port_t) ~0)))' failed.

I was indeed wondering a bit about that removal of the while loop, but
couldn't see how it could happen.
I don't see either how that filesystem is special and triggers something
in particular, its root just contains directories.
