It's... awkward. I don't think it's really a bug, because the notation
entry here a bit weird.
If this is piano music, then you may want to use s2. instead of r2.
If it's two instruments, you may want to start the polyphony notation
<< {} \\ {} >> one bar earlier.
Finally, you could always force the rests to appear lower, by doing
a,2.\rest a8\rest <d g>
