Yes, I could. However, Lilypond's stated goals include the generation of top-quality notation with minimal tweaking.


Yes, but this is one of the aspects of typesetting layout where
there are no fixed rules, but rather a matter of taste.
Han-Wen and Jan have clearly stated a number of times over
the years that their ideals largely come from hand-engraved
scores by Bärenreiter and other old German publishers.
Since I know that they both are very ambitiuous when it comes
to typesetting layout, I'm sure that they have done exactly what
you did with scores from some other publishers, namely to
look very carefully with a magnifying glass and try to deduce
the parameter values.
If you have other ideals, then one unique feature of LilyPond is
that almost all these layout parameters can be adjusted ackording
to your personal taste.
