You already did it, by sending email to bug-tar. :-)
I just now pushed a patch and if you like you can
try it out from the git repository

At some point it should find its way into
a new release. Unfortunately it's not a
trivial fix. I have not tested it under
HP-UX (I don't have access to any such machine)
so any testing you can do would be appreciated.
