Follow-up Comment #3:

I think JACK does allow connection of the MIDI generated directly to output. I
say this because a user had this setup and had inadvertently connected the
MIDI output to the input with the result that when the piece started playing
the note at the cursor was edited to be the first note played and playing then
stopped (as the score had been altered).
