I did use emerge to install gnustep.  I went perusing the Gentoo forums 
and I did find a bug report on installing gnustep-back.  I tried that to 
see if it helped anything but it doesnt. 

I spent quite a bit reading about gnustep install and I read that the 
1.60 versions are considered stable, but I noticed that a couple 
programs that didnt compile with 1.6.0 compiled with 1.5.1

I'll keep at it.  I like to tinker around with stuff.  I am teaching 
myself (or will be learning) how to write programs.
