I'd suggest you need to perform 'git gc',  or maybe git svn has
some extra overhead.

I have clones of the repositories that where being maintained
before,  they're a lot smaller.   They're currently out of
date - only being up to around september 2010.  But checked
out workspaces have the following sizes together with initial
commit dates:

base 76M Author: Andrew McCallum <mccallum@cs.umass.edu>     1994-11-04 16:29:24

They may even be built workspaces,  as I see .o's in them.
