Thanks for all the reply's I will give those a try and see what happens, later tonight when I get home. I know the .profile is read because if I put a bogus call it wond log into the computer and will give me an error on the X log. However why I can't launch apps without re running the .sh IDK.

It depend on how you select wmaker.

On my Ubuntu 12.04 I do it in the %HOME/.xsessionrc, which contain
something like:

. /usr/share/GNUstep/Makefiles/GNUstep.sh
exec wmaker

In the past (and with an older version of Ubuntu) I just selected
WindowMaker in the menu provided from gdb (the login window), and in
that case putting initialization stuff in my .profile was enough.
