Palladium scares me too. And YES, I think it's possible for this to get
through. It certainly won't happen in one step - it will
begin as an "optional" feature you can turn off, followed by increasing number
of very usefull software that will require Palladium
feature turned on. And turning Palladium "off" will be just an illusion: it
will probably still collect all information about you
and software installed on your computer and send information to MS. At first,
they will "ignore" all this information, even if it
clearly indicates that you use warez version of Office.

Also note, that Palladium (as a concept) does NOT need special hardware to run.
Special hardware requirement could be just a
tactical move, to make users feel safe as long as they don't have
Palladium-enabled hardware. But if Palladium is implemented
somwhere deep inside Windows "kernel", it will still perform all it's
functions, but users will have no clue it's there.

One may think that hackers will crack such scheme soon after it appears.
Remember how soon they cracked XP protection. But Microsoft
is smart enough to realize it would be very damaging to their business if they
really disabled software piracy. So it's possible
that Microsoft can do a MUCH better anti-piracy job, than observed in the past.
I'm not even sure anyone has REALLY cracked Windows
XP.

It will probably all start with authentication/authorization services
integrated in Windows, much like MS Passport. Banks, for
example, might use MS integrated authentication system for online banking,
shops for online shopping, etc. Soon everyone who wants
to do business online will have to buy some MS account and use MS products.
This means all businesses. And users will follow where
businesses go.

(it's a bit off topic here, address@hidden is more appropriate)
