FYI, xar is being used as the container format for packages
in Mac OS X 10.5, and in rpm5.  I've suggested xar a few times
in the past, ever since having been pointed to:
http://duplicity.nongnu.org/new_format.html
which is remarkably similar to:
http://code.google.com/p/xar/wiki/xarformat
