This is pretty well discussed/covered on the website and mail archives
but in short I think the reason is that Duplicity uses archives (tar)
that do not support the metadata. Now OS X has a version of tar that
does support metadata but unfortunately the python API does not (which
is what Duplicity uses to create the archive). Someday Duplicity may
move to a more Mac OS X friendly archive format but that hasn't
happened yet.
