Symlinks are supported, but that means preserving symlinks - not
following them (just like rsync -a would do, or tar, etc by default).
In the general case, following symlinks are a bad thing and that tends
to be a behavior only enabled by humans under very specific
circumstances. That said, actually specifying a symlink specifically
on the command line, it could be argued, is somewhat of a different
case. Still, duplicity's behavior with respect to this feels
consistent with general expectations from Unix tools.

I didn't think duplicity supported backing up a *single* symlink, but
when I tried it it worked, as it sounds like it does for you (was the
failure in your original post the saving of the symlink only, or did
you get an actual error?).
