I have a Dual Athlon 1800+ MP system on a Tyan Tiger MP board, and in order 
for my Pioneer A04 DVD burner to work, I have to first run:

hdparm -d 0 -r 0 /dev/hda (it's on my IDE channel) From what you describe, 
sounds like yours should be hdb.

If I don't first do that, then I get the exact same kinds of errors, but after 
the hdparm thing, everything burns just fine.
