According to the FAQ at Pioneer, these drives will not write at 4x, it is the 4x media that confuses them.

An article I read elsewhere says that during the OPC stage of the burn, the laser power ramps up to full and stays there and does not proceed further. After about 5 mins the laser has overheated and died...

I haven't actually read anything which says it /can/ do 4x yet. Just
that 4x media breaks it.

As per CD-R media, once a higher speed media becomes cheap, they drop
the lower speeds.

If you've got some evidence that says it can do 4x, please share.

Thanks.

What amazes me is these drives can *do* 4X DVD at all!! They were, after all,
advertised as 2X drives. I'm very surprised the drives weren't capped at that
speed, so they could turn around and sell a faster model later on (like
Lite-On, etc do with CD-R drives).

I seem to recall reading the DVD-R drives would "never" go beyond 2X due to the
manner the data was linked. It must have been another one of those published lies at
dvdplusrw.org ;-)

Just a warning - in case people have not seen it elsewhere, to visit

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/hs/pioneer.html and update their firmware.

If not and soon to be released 4x DVD-R media is used, there is a very strong possibility of burning out the laser.
