Hmm. Think it is also possible to instruct fontconfig not to antialias
for particular fonts and sizes, but I doubt you've deliberately done that.

Er. Mind you, on my system, the only font actually *called* "Helvetica"
is the bitmap font that IIRC ships with x.org.  But quite a few people
have a "Helvetica" outline font (sometimes of dubious legality).  I had
assumed you had an outline helvetica...

So.... just to cross-check - what does

fc-list : family scalable  | grep -i helvetica

now return for you?
