   This assumes something like:

   #define build_literal(str) __build_literal (str, strlen (str))

If the argument ‘str’ is a literal string, how about:

  /* -*- c -*- */
  #define build_literal(str)  make_string (str, sizeof (str) - 1)

Or is ‘sizeof’ somehow unsuitable for the job?
