Except when using emacs on a remote server.
Emacs in a terminal emulator is often superior to gui-emacs with the X
protocol tunneled over ssh.
I just tried the latter (using lucid; gtk is known to be especially
awful over tcp) and it took (in fact is taking) minutes to get the
initial frame up and responsive.
