What I pointed out was that new code wouldn't work with old Emacsen. Maybe I misunderstood your proposal? As far as I can tell, the change you propose will force me to write every `message' call like this in my packages: (if (< emacs-version 26) (message "Hello, `world'!") (message "Hello, %`world%'!"))
