That's good to know, but at this point I don't think it matters to us
that there's a Debian variety of GitLab.  Am I mistaken?

Considering Debian is historically heavy on email-based workflows, and it's where we got our original bug tracker from, it might be helpful to study how they came to this decision, and how they are coping with the transition.
