Major version numbers are there to announce new features.  With massive
changes (such as the ones that are being proposed here), you can't just
"flip a variable to get the old behaviour".  Especially people with 20
years of muscle memory and 200,000+ line configs.

Again: what's wrong with the "if you're new to Emacs, click here" button?
