I strongly disagree here: the existence of various implementations of
a feature shouldn't mean that we can't have such a feature in vanilla
Emacs (which would also mean we can't have such a feature enabled by
default).


Right. And these externally developed modules function as a kind of laboratory that explores what should be in core when core support happens. Emacs should be usable, attractive, and compelling out of the box.
