Not a command or even function but a variable?

Yeah, it says in the help you can't set just it. Not good ...

  Setting this variable directly does not take effect; use
  either M-x customize or the function ‘latin1-display’.

Don't understand how `latin1-display' is supposed to be
used ...

But that will be [*] - three chars.

This

  (set-char-table-extra-slot glyphless-char-display 0 'thin-space)

is better then since it won't prolong the line where it
happens ...
