I cannot understand why you used so much of your time and energy to 
restore a half-broken behavior (diamonds instead of undisplayable 
characters), when it would not have taken you more than fifteen minutes to 
get a correct behavior (no undisplayable characters anymore, or very few 
undisplayable characters).
