I was thinking freshmeat because they have (had?) some computer
readable interfaces, but the python page looks less than well
maintained. Likewise do the Python package in the cheeseshop :/

I don't know how nice this is, but perhaps you could leech off someone
else who are known to keep their packages reasonably up to date. Like,
say:

http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/~checkout~/ports/lang/python26/distinfo?content-type=text%2Fplain

It will stick to the 2.6 line and I suppose the URL is unlikely to
change, I reckon.
