Either directly access the CVS:

  cvs -d:pserver:address@hidden:/cvs/freetype \
      login
  cvs -d:pserver:address@hidden:/cvs/freetype \
      -z3 co freetype -dP

or get the daily snapshots from

  ftp://ftp.freetype.org/unstable
