Supplement:

We are talking about the "naked" CIDFonts now.  They are similler as
Type1 font files and do not have buildin cmaps.  

On the other hand, the "sfnt-wrapped" CIDFonts are similler as
OpenType/CFF and have buildin cmaps.

FreeType 2 is already support "sfnt-wrapped" one.  And many CIDFonts
are already "sfnt-wrapped" but not OpenType/CFF. (e.g. Morisawa New
CIDFont.)
