My Girlfriend read my copy of Rebel Code by Glyn Moody
( ISBN 0-14-029804-5 )
and became really excited by concept of free open source software after.

I think it is a better starting off good journalistic narrative read
that will lead to reading the other good books covering free software if
would get into them anyway.

It is a pity nothing similar written since, it came out in 2001 but
second edition has postscript from 2002, but the perspective and
overview it provided still remains true and good to read.

Although it is sub titled 'Linux and the Open Source Revolution' it does
cover the GNU and free software perspective.
