Thanks for the pointer Mats, but still no luck.

What I have done now is try re-insatlling MikTeX from scratch - I have tried
it with a local texmf path and once without. It makes now difference either
way. The

Latex sample2e

Command gives the following (Sorry about the long post, but I thought I'd
best include the full list as the clue may be in here)

I can't find the default format file!
INITEXMF: tex.exe failed on latex

Note that the format file is not found.

Trying the reconfigure from the start Menu made no difference and neither
did the "create latex format file" or even the "create all format files"

Create latex format file gives "INITEXMF: etex.exe failed on latex", as does
the "create all" option.

Has anyone successfully used MikTeX 1.20e - if so - any ideas where I have
gone wrong?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Al MAtthew

It looks as if your TeX installation (MikTeX?) isn't done correctly.
The latex format file is called latex.fmt and should be located
somewhere below the texmf\ directory. Anyway, I think there's a
menu item in the start menu to reconfigure MikTeX.
You can test that latex works correctly with
>>latex sample2e
in a DOS window.
