That depends on the raspi hardware revision and if you are using raspian
or a real Debian.

The Debian wiki has a list of supported Raspberry versions and links to
more or less official images. If you want to use backports, use them.

Raspbian was compiled with a completely different set of cpu flags than
Debian, but people started to mix packages from Debian into it, like
from backports. That might work sometimes, but basically its a mess.

And if you can, just use plain Debian images on your hardware, then
backports will work for you and if not, I can help you.
