Pkgsrc is portable but primarily used on NetBSD and on SmartOS (illumos 
variant).


The pkgsrc build has only the .so, not the .a.   That seems irregular to me, 
but I have packaged it as it seems to be, and avoided dealing with the scons 
build any more than necessary.  Some build systems have switches for static 
libs yes/no.
