what kind of debugging do you have in mind?  it could probably be
achieved through more regular means.

[ running different phases of GC by themselves is bound to leave your
  heap in inconsistent/broken state.  the phases themselves may
  change.  etc. ]

Make sure your code does nothing gracefully.
