This is what is in my .emacs file:

 (define-key esc-map  "g" 'goto-line)

By default M-g is a prefix key, bound to facemenu-keymap.  I prefer:

(global-set-key "\C-cg" 'goto-line)
(global-set-key "\C-cG" 'goto-char)
