I vote for
tar --same-owner -zxvpf gnu-latest.tar.gz /gnu
or possibly just
tar --same-owner -zxvpf gnu-latest.tar.gz
Writing "-zxvpf --same-owner" might make tar think that '--same-owner'
is the file that should be extracted...
